Wild clay workshop, Term 4 classes

Hi Potters!

We hope this new, fangled sunny weather has been shining on all of you. We’ve had another busy week in pottery-paradise getting classes and workshops sorted for your fabulous selves – take a look below.

New workshop – Into the Wild

Finding, testing and using wild clay
This workshop will take place over two 3-hour evening sessions:
6pm - 9pm, Wednesday 2nd of October, AND
6pm - 9pm, Wednesday 9th of October

This is a workshop for anyone who likes the idea of using clay that they have dug themselves, but doesn’t know where to start. As well as learning through using samples of clay provided by your tutor, Mark Tamura, you'll have the opportunity to bring in your own found clay and find out how to test and process it to see if it will work as a viable potting clay.

Mark is a wild/found clay enthusiast. His favourite thing about working with wild clay is being able to give someone back a piece of pottery that started its life as a piece of earth from a place that is special to them – something that can connect them with that place whenever they use it. On his journey along this wild clay path, Mark has found and used many local clay bodies, researching and testing as he goes.

In this workshop Mark will show you how to:

  • Identify clay in the wild

  • Undertake some basic field-testing

  • Process wild clay using the wet processing method

  • Blend clay to adjust its properties

  • Test fire clay

Our wheels came off… literally!

We had a wee bit of an ooops in the kiln room this week - the wheels literally came off one of the trollies we use to load the kilns! Sadly a few pots fell off the trolley too and have broken. So sorry if your pot was among those damaged. We’ve put the shards on the (repaired) trolley for people to identify, so if you find your maker’s mark is among them, please talk to Libby for a firing credit.

Term 4 Classes online now

Term 4 classes start the week of 14th October, and are up on the Class Bookings page now. Here’s what’s on offer:

** New Class ** Abstract Sculpture with Sylvia Sinel
Monday afternoons 1pm – 4pm, 8 weeks, starting 14th October
If you missed out on a place in Sylvia’s workshop on the 14th of September, here’s another opportunity to learn with her! Sylvia uses an array of construction techniques to create her abstract forms, sometimes incorporating slab, coiling, pinching and wheel thrown aspects into one piece. She sometimes explores multi-media to decorate her works and dabbles outside the world of traditional glazing, using paints and other materials to achieve her desired surface finish. If you're looking to learn something completely new, you will benefit from Sylvia's non-traditional and interdisciplinary approach to pottery.
