Hi potters!
How fabulous to see the sun shining today, after all this rain. Although, we’ve been lucky to have your sun-shiney faces in and out of the studio all week to keep us cheerful of course 😊 This week we have a fantastic event with Andrea du Chatenier to announce, read about it below, along with all the other tid-bits we have for you.
Artist’s talk – Andrea du Chatenier
7pm, Friday 23rd August at the WSP Studios
Show and tell + potluck dinner
Please bring a plate to share and something to drink if you wish.
We are excited to have Andrea du Chatenier as this year's judge for the WSP annual exhibition. To hear and see what makes her tick come along to her artist's talk and potluck dinner. Members and non-members are all welcome, no charge, but please let us know if you’re attending here.
About Andrea:
Born in Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, Andrea du Chatenier is a sculptor turned ceramicist. She has received numerous grants and awards for her accomplished and challenging work, including selection for the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Wallace Arts Trust Vermont Award, and the Portage Ceramics Residency Award at Guldagergaard, Denmark. In 2022 Andrea was awarded the Blumhardt Foundation Gift for her contribution to New Zealand Craft.
After completing the Tylee Cottage Artist Residency at the Sarjeant Gallery in 2004, Andrea set up studio in Whanganui. With her current practice du Chatenier has turned her focus to exploring the inherent qualities of the medium. The forms are abstracted and commonly stacked together as towering structures emphasizing the tactile and sensual properties of the ceramic surface.
Is anyone Auckland bound?
WSP has bought some awesome new kiln shelves! The catch is that they’re currently in Auckland and we’re looking for a way to bring them back. If anyone is heading to Auckland and fancies a side-quest to Auckland Studio Potters in Onehunga, we’d be ever so grateful if you wouldn’t mind bringing some back for us please. If you’ve got a bit of spare space in your vehicle, please get in touch with Libby 😊
Exhibition opportunity – Quarry Ceramic Awards
Closing Saturday 31st August 2024
The Quarry Ceramic Awards are proudly hosted by the Northland Craft Trust and exhibited in the Yvonne Rust Gallery, at the Quarry Arts Centre (Whangarei). The Awards are a National Competition with works accepted from around Aotearoa, as long as they are made from predominantly ceramic. The Awards are “open” meaning there is no criteria for entries - anything goes, small, large, vessel, sculpture.
Entries for the 2024 Ceramic Awards are now open, and close on Saturday 31st August 2024. One entry per person, $30 entry fee. You will need 3 quality, digital, 'catalogue-worthy' photos of your entered work as part of your entry form, with a white background.
Exhibition Space Opportunity – Tauranga
The Incubator Creative Hub in Tauranga are gearing up and booking in ceramicists for their 2025 exhibition programme. They have several exhibition spaces including The Pot House, which is a space dedicated to ceramic art. They welcome applications from groups or individuals who would like to exhibit. They have a strong pottery following in Tauranga and are housed in the Tauranga Historic Village.
If you’re looking for a space to exhibit in, you can find more information here.
